Risk Factors
A risk factor is any characteristic, behavior, or condition that increases your chances of developing a disease. The etiology for the development of appendiceal carcinoma is largely unknown. Here are some potential risk factors for developing appendiceal carcinoid tumors. No risk factors have been linked to appendiceal adenocarcinoma.
Age
Most cases of appendix cancer are diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 60, depending on the specific type.
Gender
Appendix cancer is slightly more common in women than in men.

Certain conditions
Certain conditions such as pernicious anemia, atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome may increase the risk of developing a carcinoid tumor of the appendix.
