Risk Factors
A risk factor is a behavior, characteristic, or condition that raises the possibility of developing a disease. Here are the risk factors for developing Kaposi sarcoma:

Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8)
All forms of Kaposi sarcoma are caused by infection with the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV); however, not every person with this virus develops Kaposi sarcoma.

HIV Infection
People infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at an increased risk for developing Kaposi sarcoma. This risk is even greater for men who have sex with other men and are infected with HIV.
Immunodeficiency
A weakened immune system may increase your risk for developing Kaposi sarcoma. People at high-risk may include those who have had an organ transplant and take immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection of the transplant.

Gender
Men are at higher risk for developing most forms of Kaposi sarcoma than women.
