Risk Factors

Although currently the exact cause of hepatoblastoma is not known, there are several risk factors that have been shown to increase a child's risk of developing the disease:

Inherited genetic conditions
Inherited genetic conditions

Certain inherited genetic conditions such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, hemihypertrophy, and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) may increase a child's risk of developing hepatoblastoma.

Biliary atresia

Biliary atresia is a condition in which the tubes that carry bile to the intestines become blocked. This condition may increase a child's risk for developing hepatoblastoma.

Low birth weight
Low birth weight

Infants of low birth weight may be at higher risk for developing hepatoblastoma.
