Managing the Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Hair Loss
Hair loss is another common side effect of some chemotherapy drugs. Usually, one to three weeks after starting treatment your hair will start to fall out. Depending on the specific drug used, you may also lose the hair on your face, legs, underarms, and pubic region. Remember that this is not permanent, and your hair will grow back when you finish treatment.
Here are some tips to help with hair loss during chemotherapy:
- Cut your hair short. This will make your hair look more full and thick, and make hair loss easier to manage.
- Protect your head from the sun. Put on a hat and apply sunscreen before going outside.
- Stay warm once you lose your hair by wearing a hat or scarf.
- Buy a wig before you lose your hair, so you can match it to the color and style of your own hair.
- Be gentle with your hair. Use a mild shampoo and brush your hair carefully with a soft brush. Avoid chemicals, dyes, and bleach.
- Avoid using curling irons, hair dryers, and hair spray.
