Mild skin irritations are another common side effect of chemotherapy. Your skin may become red, dry, or itchy, and your nails may become dark, brittle, or cracked. It is important to treat your skin gently and remember that most of these changes will go away when you finish treatment.

Here are some tips to manage changes in your skin or nails during chemotherapy:

Loose clothing
Dehumidifier
Washing dishes
  • Take short baths or showers and use a mild soap.
  • Wear soft, loose, and comfortable clothing that will not irritate your skin.
  • Use a humidifier. Your skin will feel better in cool, humid environment.
  • Wear gloves when gardening or washing dishes.
  • Keep your skin moist using lotion or moisturizer.
  • Avoid using colognes, perfumes, and aftershaves that contain alcohol.
  • Use sunblock and wear a hat outside.
  • Talk to your doctor before having a manicure or pedicure.
