Questions to Ask the Doctor

One of your biggest allies in battling cancer is your oncologist. Questions are your primary resource to gain a better understanding of your disease and enhance your quality of care. Well-thought-out questions can help you get the most out of your appointments and can make all the difference. Here are some questions you may want to ask:

  • What is the extent of cancer in my bones? Which bones has the cancer spread to?
  • Can you explain the results of my diagnostic tests?
  • What are my treatment options? Which treatments do you recommend and why?
  • What is the goal of treatment?
  • Are there any side effects of these treatments?
  • Is there anything I can do to help with treatment of my cancer?
  • Would you recommend participating in a clinical trial?
  • What strategies can I use to manage bone pain and other symptoms?
  • How will this diagnosis affect my daily life and activities?
  • Where can I go for emotional support? Are there any support groups or ways to get help coping?

It may be a good idea to seek a second opinion, especially from a doctor experienced in treating bone metastases. A second opinion can help you better understand your disease and feel more confident about your course of treatment.
